Sandeply from Home Depot...
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:26:13 pm »
Decided to give it a try today and bought a sheet of 1/4" - 4X8. Plan was to use for backer boards. Store cut to 2 x 4 sheets for me at no charge. $`19.87 for the sheet.
On the way to the checkout I saw the "Cull Cart" marked, "all pieces 75% OFF".
There was a piece of 1/4" Oak plywood that measured 20" x 79" with only a small area that cannot be used.

Got to cashier (contractor checkout) and the young man rang up the Sandeply.
He could not find a sticker on the Oak p/w and looked at me and said,
"Looks like that is included in the full sheet to me!"

So I thanked him profusely, paid the $21.62 and got the heck out of there!

Sandeply - $19.87
Almost half sheet of Oak plywood - Free
Pleasant and helpful Checker...PRICELESS!

It pays to be nice to the store employees!

I don't think ignorance of his job is a result of your being nice.  Cull lumber is painted to indicate price and his computer has the colors listed with prices.  I always check the cull bin as sometimes you can find some good buys there.

Now Kepy, Don't burst Graybeards bubble.  I would be estatic to get that kind of deal also.

Box stores in the states are notorious (sp) for not pricing items.  The government has been clamping down on them for the past few years.  Just like the scanners they use.  I always say if after the third swipe the price doesn't register then it's *free*!!

Wal-marts was one of the biggest offenders!! I watch every item that is rung up  to make sure they are not overcharging me.  They lower prices on the shelves and then don't put the lower price in the computer.......................Chelcass

I had a similar thing happen to me the other day.  I went to buy a SharkBite fitting and 20" stainless steel hose.  When I got to the cashier, the fitting rang up and the hose said "Invalid UPC."  She said, "Well, the hose isn't coming up, so it's yours."  I tried to argue with her that I would go get the HD product number and she said it would show up the next time because the register alerts HD when that happens.  I was SO appreciative.

Well Kepy the clerk and I looked all over that board for any kind of 'indicator' and neither of us could either a UPC code or a single spot of paint.
Therefore he made an Executive Decision to let it go.
He is the assistant day manager of the Contractor Sales Department.
I would have gladly given a few dollars for it but FREE is Better!

Not yet...I needed some 1/8" for some backing and I will try the new stuff.
I will say it cuts nice on the table saw.
The center core appears to be 'blocks' rather than a full sheet of veneer so I am thinking it may have some effect on blade life due to the additional adhesives.
Surface is good but it sure don't take stain well. I tried to sue a red mahogany stain for effect and it was very blotchy.

When I do cut some on the SS I will report to the group.

I used part of the oak freebie and it took the mahogany stain very nicely!

Who knows GB maybe you could sue the stain company for making the ply look splotchy. Big enough settlement and you wouldn't care if it came from the regular bin or the cull bin!  ;)
