MDF finish.

Hi Everyone. I have a friend here in the UK who is about 200 miles away from me. She is taking delivery of a Hegner scroll saw today after weeks of frustration with a cheap scroll saw that has packed up, you can imagine how happy she is. She is still learning and has a way to go. She is coming down to me for a week at the end of April and I can show her the finer points of scroll saw work. I wont say what her name is but she has been making name signs from MDF as it is the only material she can get locally along with plywood. I had not used MDF before but i found some 18mm in my shop a week ago and made some name signs and I was wondering about the finish which will be paint. I sprayed one name with a couple of coats of primer and then a couple of top coats of  spray on acrylic paint but it was not very good. I was wondering about buying some acrylic paint and hand painting them, I think it would be easier to paint inside the letters and then maybe give the sign a spray lacquer finish. I would be very grateful for any comments.
