New Computer....
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:49:49 pm »
My self built desktop computer has been showing signs of age lately and rather than go through the exercise of collecting parts and building a new desktop I have opted to do the 'laptop' thing!

This evening I went to MicroCenter and bought myself a new Acer laptop!
So far I am loving it!

Acer Aspire model 5750-6866
4 Gb memory
500 GB Hard Drive
15.6" widescreen
DVD reader/burner
multi-card reader
WiFi enabled
HDMI port

$399.99

Good Reviews and I turned it on and set it up with no problems so far....

I will keep you all posted on the progress...

Congratulations Graybeard, that's a heck of a deal. I switched from a desktop to a laptop about a year ago, I think you will like the convenience of a laptop. The only thing I miss is my Windows xp. I am still not used to Windows 7.

Right!
Going to take me a while to get used to Win 7! I have been with XP Pro since the day it was released!

But I sure like the idea of sitting outside on the patio and 'commiserating with everyone!

Here's another Congratulations GB. I switched over to a laptop Christmas 2010 and love it. My desk top crapped out a few months later so I was lucky not to be without. I am also using Skype so give me a shout sometime.  :)

Congrats, once you get used to Win 7 you will find it much easier to use with more options to use. I got a new desktop in Jan, went from a computed a friend (an IT person) built for me about 6 years ago to a new HP (Out of the box) computer. The difference is amazing. :D :D

One of the best features of Windows7 is the "search" function in all the windows explorer windows. It is so easy to search for files and you can include whichever folders you want in the searches.  Once you get used to it, you will wonder how you did without it. I was also a big fan of XP, but everyone is phasing out support for it, including drivers for new equipment like cameras, scanners and printers.  It is going to be something that will have a difficult time keeping up with current technology and it is time to move on.  I hope you come to really enjoy it! :)  Sheila

I have been a lap-topper for many years.  You will like it I am sure.  7 just takes a little poking and hopeing.

Congratulations!  I, too, switched to a laptop a couple of years ago.  Last fall, I went one step further and bought a docking station for it.  I now have my 22" monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse, and USB peripherals all plugged into the dock.  If I want to take the laptop somewhere, I simply snap it out of the dock and it's ready to go.  When I get back, I snap it back in and all my "desktop" accessories function again.  It's like having the best of both a laptop and a desktop.  I'm running XP SP3 at home on the laptop... but when I bought new business computers, I went with WIN7 64 bit.  If I had to do it again, I'd have chosen 32 bit, as some software has compatibility issues, even when installed under 32 bit mode.

Enjoy your new "toy"!

Have fun with it Ed.  I am still using xp on a couple of machines, but 7 is the best os so far.  It woun't be long until you are used to it.  I have a laptop and my desktop and both get a lot of use.
