Question about glueing

When you use spray adhesive to glue your project to a backer board do you lay the project on a flat surface or do you put it on painters pyramids?

due to the fact that I use mostly wood backer i use wood glue instead of spray adhesive, so I always glue on a flat surface.
this way the weight will be equal divided over the whole project .

If I read your question correctly - I lay the pattern on a flat piece of wood, spray the glue - LIGHTLY - wait a short spell, then apply it to the wood sitting on the bench.  I don't understand where the pyramids would come into play.

I don't use painters pyramids, only because I don't have any. Also, any spraying that I do (glue, paint or finish) I have to do outside so I use a lot of natural alternatives, rocks, sticks and logs.
That being said, I quit using spray glue. I find it really messy on small jobs (too much overspray) the fumes are really awful and waiting for a "nice" day to spray during a Minnesota winter isn't fun. To stick a pattern down I use glue sticks, the kids craft type, simple ans easy. To stick a project to a backer I use hotglue most of the time (wood glue and super glue are my other methods occasionally).

I use a page of an old news paper. Unfold it, lay it on an old chair in my shop, put the pattern on it and spray the glue. I let it set for a few minutes and after applying the pattern to the wood, I throw the news paper into the recycle bin. Easy peasy!

Hey TigerPaw, To answer your question, You can use the pyramids if you have them, but you can lay it on a flat surface. line the area with some news paper to collect the over spray. That being said, I don't use spray adhesive for backer boards. Like Marcel, I use Wooden backer boards. I use Aleen's tacky glue for this. I apply small drops of the glue with a tooth pick onto the portrait making sure to get glue in areas that might shift. Also lightly apply the glue to the perimeter of the portrait. Lay the portrait down onto the face of the backer board, then with the tooth pick, clean up any glue squeeze out. Weigh it down with a couple of bricks and let it dry.

I have a paint booth made from a cardboard box.  When I spray glue a pattern, I line it with a sheet of newspaper, place the piece on the paper and discard it when finished.  When I apply poly/lacquer I set the piecte on a lazy susan, turning it apply a even coat.  I cover the front of the box with more newspaper to keep out any dust I may stir up while moving around the shop or cutting more fun.
