My 40-690

I LOVE IT.  This saw is so awesome.  I can not believe the difference between my 40-690 and the craftman 18 inch that I have.  The wide base helps me control my cutting a whole lot better.  It is so quiet, I can even hear myself think.  One thing I do like about this saw is the upper arm rasies up so I can feed my blade in without bending every which way.  The blade is out where I can see it and it helps me stay on the pattern line.  Loading the blade was one of my concerns because of the small hole in the plate.  Well, it is not as bad as I thought it would be.  I also really like the way the top of the blade sets right in the lock and then you can control the tension of the blade.  It also came with a stand and a light which is great.  To rate this saw between 1 and 10 I would have to give it a 11.  I would have to saw to anyone that is thinking of buying a new saw get the 40-690, it is just awesome.

Congratulations on getting a great saw!
One other hint, There is a guard in front of the lower blade clamp. It is easier to mount your blade if it is not there, so remove it!

How is the supplied light for brightness?  How many watts?  Just curious because the supplied light on my Porter Cable was basically useless.

Hey Dan, I went out to the saw to look for that blade clamp.  I seen it and it will be gone in the morning.  What is it for anyway?

The light on the saw is really nice, and it lights up the the pattern ok.  The wattage I do not know, the box it came in said nothing, and the bulb said nothing.  So if it burns out I will have to take it with me to get the right bulb.

It is just a guard to protect you from the moving blade if your had a laps and stuck you fingers under the table while the blade was moving. It just gets in the way while you are changing the blade.

I am a new owner for just about 20 days now of my 40-690. Where has it been all my life? Am so pleased as well. Family and friends will have to drag you from the shop. Have fun.

The wattage of the light bulb is 25watt and are not hard to find. I get mine at the local Ace Hardware store, part #3019817. They seem to last a long time for me but, I keep a spare around anyway for the late night emergencies.    If an when you need to replace yours, take it with you to compare the style, there are several 25watt bulbs to chose from.

Jim, it is the new Delta Saw, same saw as the Dewalt 788. At one time both Delta and Dewalt where owned by the same company, Black and Decker.

You could probably go to a 40 or 50 watt bulb with no problem as long as it fits inside the reflector / shade, and the screw end matches, probably be almost twice as bright. Give it a try if you want more light on your work.
Speaking for myself the brighter the better as long as it isn't shining in my eyes.

Gabby, the light fixture I have over my saw is rated for a 40 watt bulb, but I replaced the incandescent bulb with a CFL with the light output of a 100w bulb.  If I remember right, it's around 25w.  Takes a minute or two for full brightness, but I have no problem with that compared to the amount of light shining on my work area.  Nice and bright!  Once I've got my Delta and can see what the socket size is, I'm hoping to be able to find a CFL that'll fit.
