In our back yard. "Ha-ha-ha-HAA-ha!" "Ha-ha-ha-HAA-ha!"
« on: December 06, 2011, 06:59:24 pm »
Ok I was on my way into the house from my shop when I heard this noise. Thump, thump, thump. Thump, thump, thump. Thump, thump, thump. So I looked up and right above the shop is this Red Headed Wood Pecker pecking away.  So I ran in, got my wife and her camera and this is what we caught. If you listen close you can hear the sound he is making and the pieces hitting the tin roof of my shop. Hope you enjoy.  :)  :)  :)

That's pretty cool Russ! I was waiting for the punchline at the end, but it never came.

Good job Russ!  You never know what birds will show up in Florida.  We watched a huge bald eagle land in a norfolk island pine right across the street from our house in the middle of St Petersburg last year.

We had a pair nesting in a old dead tree in our front yard.  Raised three sets of babies.  Then the tree fell down..........bummer!!  They are so interesting to watch.  They would even come to our suet feeders in the winter.  It was funny to see them try and cling to that little feeder and eat.  Thanks for sharing.

According to my Stokes guide, the Pileated Woodpecker is the largest of the woodpeckers, crow sized 18". A while back I had a pair of them searching for grubs in the oaks in my front yard. they leave a pretty big hole after they are done. We have Acorn Woodpeckers too, they are the ones with the clown faces. They store acorns by making a hole just large enough to force an acorn into. There is one large oak that is half dead that has been turned into swisscheese by them, they also nest in it. They only use dead standing trees for this purpose. Eventually the dead trees fall and they have to find a new home. I have to make sure and leave the bird houses open otherwise they will fill them with acorns, then because the doors are too small for them they either try to open it bigger or they just abandon the acorns..
