It is a s it says a Backer Board which is a thin piece of wood that goes in behind the cut out Such as the black area when you do a portrait cut out I know others can explaiin it in exact detail If you are wanting to know more about it.  I do hope this has given you at least some idea of what it is.

Well I would say the Better more Professional way is to use say a 1/8" piece of wood that fits the area after the portrait is installed.  Now I have been using the thicker black poster board stock I buy at Hobby Lobby.  Not as strong as actual wood, but does its job for me.  Danny  :+}

Backer board is kind of a generic term too.  You can back your project in any material you wish.

It goes behind the project to add some color or contrast to help see what you have cut. You can use a variety of materials, sometimes I don't even use one.  :)

It also adds strength and rigidity especially to thin ply such as 1/8" !

The backer board can also add contrast, color, depth, mood to your piece. It also insures that everybody that views it sees it the same way, it hides the background that could be seen through the cutting which could distract from the piece and not give the impact you the artist wanted to portray.

Here is the back of a finished cutting backed with 1/4" masonite painted flat black both sides, all screwed to the frame from the back. By removing the screws in the backing the picture and backing come off the frame as one unit if needed.
