Dolphin Puzzle in Monkeypod wood

I cut this puzzle tonight out of monkeypod wood.  It is extremely lightweight, almost like balsa.  It grows here locally and this tree was destined for the brush site if not for a local company who intercedes and takes hardwood trees and mills them locally.  There is a lot of hardwood in Pinellas county Florida and this is a great service to the woodworkers of the area!

nice, is this a natural color or did you dye it?
I read the wood is supposed to be very hard and also good for turning.

I'm not big on the puzzles, but the cutting looks great and that is pretty wood. Glad you kept it out of the chipper.

Torsten, no stain or dye, only lemon oil.  That is the natural color.  It is fairly hard, but so lightweight it is somewhat brittle.  This puzzle is a touch over an inch thick and it needs that thickness to prevent breaking.

Thanks JIm.  I've never seen Monkeypod for sale anywhere except from the guys who mill the local hardwoods.  Their website is http://www.viablelumber.com/ in case you are interested in what they do.  Expensive?  I bought two planks @ auction during our woodcrafters guild meeting, each about 6 feet long and over a foot wide, just over an inch thick, for a total of $35.  I considered it a steal.
