Sheila Landry Designs Horse Candle Tray by KarlB
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:43:02 pm »
I finished this last week, but just getting around to posting.  I've since cut 3 others candle trays (pics coming).

I really like this pattern and was surprised when I asked Sheila about a horse pattern and she had one in the making!  Thank you Sheila!

I don't know the wood species -sorry.  It is 3/8" thick and only finished (right now) with Minwax Golden Oak stain.  I wanted the grain to pop.  I'm still pondering the top coat.

You did a beautiful job on this Karl!  If I were guessing, I would say it was some kind of Mahogany, such as Sepele.  The deep grain is what makes me think so. There are many kinds of Mahogany though and it is hard to tell.

I love spray shellac for a finish.  It give a lustre without too much of a shine and it does protect your wood.  It has been my favorite finish for fretwork lately.  You can apply several coats in an evening, allowing just a bit of time to dry between them.

This was really a pleasure to see! :)

Great design and job of cutting. I agree don't make it glossy, satin or semi gloss is better.
Glossy makes it look like it's from China. LOL

Thank you all for the praise.

I should have added this picture for identifying the wood:

Ideas?

I was thinking Sepele as well, but I've got some Sepele and it doesn't look like it.  This was wood I got from a palette one time.

Hey Karl, That is a great cutting! I like it a lot. If that wood came from a pallet, there's no telling what kind of wood it is.

Nice cutting.  What about Butternut for the wood?
