Need Help
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:42:21 pm »
I have an idea for a new Intarsia and am looking for a side view of a Dewalt DW788 scrollsaw. All the pictures I find are of the left side, I need the side view of the right side. If someone could take a picture and post it I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, Al

Al: Hope you don't mind if I "high-jack" this thread.

Dan: I notice in your picture you have a clamp in place above the lower arm. What's its purpose? I like the outrigger you have across the top of the stand to hold the worklight. Have you thought of building a cabinet to fit in the stand?

alien, The clamp is holding the table mount. In checking the front to back movement of the blade, I found, as is the case for most type II DeWalt saws, that the blade does not move perfectly up and down. It is square to the table from side to side, but not front to back. I found that if you move the rear table mount up a little, it helps correct this problem. I'm still playing with how to fix this permanently. For now the clamp is holding the clamp mount to the saw.
As for building a cabinet for the stand, No. I rest my feet on the lower brace of the stand, so a cabinet would be in the way.
If you look at the light mount, it actually holds my lighted magnifier light on the left side and another light on the right. I had that light removed to take the picture.

Ah, I tried the clamp trick also but at the other end of the arm. It didn't help much, enough, however, to indicate that it should work. I then enlarged the four holes that hold the screws for the part that deWalt refers to as the "Mount, Rockr, Btm" - Fig # 13. I slotted these holes by about 3/32". On reassembling the machine this allowed me to position that bottom rocker mount 1/16" further forward than originally.

Net result was a reduction in front-back motion from 0.04 to 0.02 - I'm calling that 1/64, and sticking with it. The maximum forward position of the blade occurs when the blade is 1/2" above the lowest part of the stroke (total stroke is 3/4").

Good luck with your machine,
