Yes, most manufacturers recommend that you release the tension when the saw is not in use.

I agree....I always release the tension of the blade when finished cutting, even for a few minutes. Jim

I remove the blade completly most of the time. Usually I take a new blade for a new project, so I will be getting rid of it anyway. I also have kids in the house, they are never in my shop with out me but just in case I wouldn't want them to figure out how to turn it on with a blade in it.

I take off the tension and open the upper clamp.
@ mrsn
My complete wood shop has only power when I switch it on at my "secret switch" - which is not that secret, but not reachable/operational for the kids.

I have thought about installing something like that in my shop, and probably will soon.

I don't have small children but I do have a main switch to control all power tools except the table saw. When I'm done at the end of the day, I hit the switch and have a beer!

interesting, I
always
loosen it on my bandsaw and only do it on the scrollsaw if I end in an inside cut... Guess it's a no brainer, doesn't say much for me, hehe...

@ Katie You should Install one for sure with kids in the house I have one installed they are great one switch and evrythinghas power even the lights and it is up where no kid can reach it (Newphews and Nieces as well as friends Children) If you get the chance run one you won't be sorry.
As for the Blade tenison being lose, I thought everyone did that, I have done it from day one.

Bluesuede, I always release tension on the bandsaw to, and usually on the scrollsaw, but i think it is muchmore crucial on the bandsaw. If the bandsaw is tensioned it affects the tires, and can put a somewhat permanent bump in the blade.
