I need ideas
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:03:12 pm »
Our woodworking club has a bimonthly challenge. the next challenge is to build something out of wood that can fly. We meet in a middle school multipurpose room, and our project must be demonstrated at the meeting. Any ideas?

I have made boomerangs that flew pretty well.  Would that work?

Bill, Sounds good, but I'd hate to throw a boomerang in a room full of old woodworkers! :o

What could be more fun that watching some light weighted air planes fly around?  Or those whirly things that you rubbed in your hands to get them to spin and go into the air?  )I hope someone knows what I am talking about.)

Dgman
There are quite a few glider model plans on the internet, a simple google search should give you more than you need.
Like this,

http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=yhs-avg&type=yahoo_avg_hs2-tb-web_us&p=Free+Model+glider+Plan+Downloads

If that isn't what you're looking for modify the search any way you want, I didn't specify wood in my search. I chose gliders as you don't need a power source, and they wouldn't cause serious injury if someone were struck by it. Many are only a few grams in weight.
Keep in mind though you will be building with Balsa, everything else will be too heavy. There are also many hobby stores on line that handle it. I remember the cheap old model kits with their soft flimsy stuff, better grade than that is available.
I hope this helps, good luck,

The plan maker of the first clock that Malc did, had a free download of a gear do-hickey that launched a propeller.  It was really cool.  I am in Dallas watching my grandson right now or i would send you the link.  But I'm pretty sure it was from the website that Malc posted on the plans to his first clock.

Hey DG how about this looks easy enough and it flys, well in a way it does anyways but for an enclosed room it would work...

OK, going out on a limb here, but how about a very lightweight model of a house lifted by a bunch of helium filled balloons (as in the cartoon movie "UP!".  Even if it didn't win anything it would still be an attention getter!  You can get the balloons at a party store.

Hey Chachi, I've been a subscriber to Runnerduck for years, they are distant neighbors in WA and enjoy (?)
much the same weather and seasons. Ken is a nice fellow and I have corresponded with him numerous times.
I'm afraid that duck doesn't really qualify as "flying" but only appears to fly.
