9 inch 4 lobe red cedar bowl
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:57:56 pm »
Made from a 9" circular piece of 7/8 red cedar that the manufacturer was going to burn if you would believe that.
Sealed with Tung Oil and waxed.  The design is my own.

That is awesome.  I really like the design.  How do you sand it?

Marion this type of bowl is pretty easy to make.  There is a book that is published by Fox Chapel Publishing called Wooden Bowls from the scroll saw by Carole Rothman, this book is well worth adding to your library if you do not all ready have it.  The book walks you through the basic bowl to more advanced ones to even making vases and urns all using just a scroll saw and sanding.  No router or lathe work on them.  As for how I made the bowl I cut rings at an angle and then glued each ring on top of the previous one then sanded the heck out of it hehe.  The basic guidelines are in the book.  Steve also has several in his patterns.  It can be lots of fun.

What a beautiful bowl.  Hard to believe they were going to destroy that chunk of lumber.

NICE!  I looked at that book in Borders the other day.  Put it back on the shelf.  Maybe I should go back and get it!

Mainwoods,  I highly recommend the book for lots of reasons.  Some of the laminates and techniques in are easily applied to other types of projects.  If you are interested in making bowls, it is a great step-by-step approach to doing it.

very nice job. I have the book also and it's well worth getting. Here's a site that  has software to design bowls and baskets that Carole posted. There's also an angle calculator.
