Dremel air blower not working.
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:13:46 pm »
Newbie here, need some help figuring out why the air blower on the saw does not work.

I'm using a 16" Dremal scroll saw (borrowed for now), and the air blower does not work. Any ideas on how to get it working? I have already unscrewed it to make sure its not clogged, and it isnt.

Thanks for helping out a newbie!

Check the 'Bellows' for cracks....

I do not use the build in Air blower - actually I dismounted it to make my saw less noisy.
Some of us (me too) do use a small fish tank pump - these work much better. If the build in air blower doesn't work any more (said bellow is broken) - change to a fish tank pump.

First of all you should check if there are any tube, which are not connected.

On my SIP the bellows are operated by the movement of the top arm. If the blade is not quite in the correct position  with the correct tension the arm does not make contact with the bellows.

Thanks for the info., but exactly where are the bellows. Is it an easy check since I don't want to tinker with the saw too much since its a loaner.
The fish tank pump sounds cool, I have one of those in the garage.

I knew I would like this site when I found it.

Hi all, I have an old craftsman with the same problem. I found 2 ideas at another site, num 1 I can't use because my saw has a casing around it. The scroller had a Henenger(?) and poked a hole in a tennis ball stuck a hose in it and placed it under the lower arm.
I went the vacuum way. Had an old house vacuum that is in my garage, duct taped some more 5/8ths hose on it I had laying around so I could put the vac outside.
Needs a little more tweaking but it is working, cuts down on clean up too.

IF you proceed with the Fish Tank pump get the biggest one you can afford! The very small ones just don't put out enough air to be effective...Experience talking!

As GB said, it's the "bellows" more than likely.  I have the Dremel 1680 myself and it doesn't work any longer either.  I have a new one, but it looks like you have to disassemble the whole thing just to get it in.  The bellow is inside the housing on the top of the upper arm.  Can't see any way to get to it easily, so haven't changed it.  Put on an aquarium pump (Elite Model 803) that says up to 20 gallon.  Believe I purchased at local pet store.  Works much better that the builtin blower!

I'm impressed to see I'm not the only one with a Dremel, my blower is still working...for the time being
I love the smell of saw dust in the morning.

If yuor blower is not working, your lucky.  Who wants all that dust flying around your shop anyway?  On both of my scrollsaws, my drill press, tablesaw, Band saw, joiner, etc. I have "Dust Collectors".
One good gauge for dust in the air is to look at your glasses.  If you got dust on them you have dust going to your lungs and that ain't good.  So quit blowing and start collecting..  If you want to see more I will try to post pictures.

I'm one of the many "masked" scrollers" I don't turn on my saw without one, but it is hard to see what you're doing w/o a blower or sucker...
