Finishing question
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:36:39 am »
Is there a finishing product that does not darken light colored wood, but still brings out the wood's grain? I currently use Danish Oil Natural by WATCO but do not like how it tends to darken maple and ash, although I really like how it finishes walnut and other darker woods. I read the thread about lemon oil. Does it tend to darken light wood also? I always use the WATCO poly spray as a final finish. Thanks for your help

Hey Ray, Any oil will change or darken the color and grain. You will have to try a water based finish, but they will not bring out the grain like an oil will.

I use a waterbased  finish called Polycrylic. I get it at Lowes. It doesn't really darken the woods, but puts a nice finish

Use sanding sealer not the water base, sand it lightly with a fine grit paper and put your danish over the top for a harder finish

Have a question.
When using lemon oil, should I glue base on before or
after applying oil?
Thanks,
 Phil
