FD Ultra Reverse blades
« on: November 23, 2010, 09:54:55 pm »
Got my blades and tried out today.  I gotta say they are awesome!  I'll never use anything else again.  Had to slow down a bit to keep from over cutting so takes a little getting use to.   If you havn't tried them, you really should.  Also the service from Mikes is outstanding.  Need blades quick, get'em there.  Also there is a little groove at the top of the blade to instantly know it's the top.  If you do fretwork these are a must.

Flying Dutchman blades are the only blades I use plus it is nice to talk to Mike. I am glad you gave them a try.  8)

Hey JJ, I use the Ultra Reverse blades too and love them. The only problem is that they don't come in #0/2. So I still use Olsen 0/2R's for very small cuts.

I got the #1 since there isn't a 0/2 and it worked better to me.  I used 0/2 before these. Not anymore.

dgman, you said

My experience has been that Olsen blades are a lot larger in any nominal size than are FDs.  Could be that I chose the wrong style or whatever.  In any event, I find both Olsen and FD both quite useful, but would appreciate any further insight you may have.

Terry, I find just the opposite. The FD UR1 is as big as an Olsen #2R. The UR1 can't do as fine a cut as the Olsen 0/2R, or at least for me. Don't get my wrong, I love the FD UR blades, but I still have to use an Olsen 0/2R when I need a finer Blade.

I have found that the same blade type. Cuts different. I have had a blade in the saw. Broke it and put a new blade in and it felt like it cuts different? Am I nuts or can this happen. I know I may still be nuts..

I had always used the #2 reverse by Olsen.  However, I have converted to using a #3 Ultra Reverse and love them.  Somewhere on here I posted a couple of comparison pictures.  Do not know where they be at now.  LOL.  You might want to dig through the posts and maybe you can find them.

I know what you are saying. Sometimes when you have been cuttting with the same blade for awhile and get used to it, then change to a new one of the same number and make, it feels different.
I think that it is one or two things that do it. First, you now know what a SHARP blade can do for you.  ;D  The old one was getting dull but you didn't notice that it was getting harder to push because it was easier to control and it was so gradual of a change, you just got used to it.  :-[  The other thing that I have noticed, especially when doing alot of corners and tight turns, you can twist the blade in a way that makes it want to drift right or left, and again it is such a slow and slight change that it is easy to get use to. So you keep cutting until it breaks!
NOW you have to retrain yourself using a new sharp, untwisted blade to let the blade just do it's work!  :D  But, not to worry, you will soon twist that blade and dull it until it feels like the old one.  ;D   Untill it breaks........  :D :D :D :D

I use the Olson Mach Speed #5R to do most of my cutting. I also have the #2R when I need it. The only reason I haven't used Fd Blades, is I can get the Olsons here locally. Sorry Mike. I promise I'll call you one of these days. Dave  8)
