need new saw

Steve,
I know a lot of folks ask this question. But let me try to narrow the question. I am thinking about getting a dewalt 788 scrollsaw but am wondering if there is one a little less expensive that does not vibrate much. I currently have a sears 16" that works when it wants to. Only 4 years old but i will be in the middle of a project and it quits. I let it sit for a few minutes and then it will work again. At any rate, thanks for any advice.

Will, I'm not steve but, Issue #40 of the Scrollsaw magazine rated the top saws by price class. You will never regret buying quality. It will make your scrolling a more pleasurable experience.
The new delta is the same saw as the Dewalt 788. It comes with the stand and light so it is a much better bang for your buck. Go for that one if that is where you need to be price wise.
The best starter saw in it's class is the Porter Cable. It was ranked with the lowest vibration of it's class and is under $200.00. I am teaching two people to scroll on this saw and it is decent, but given the choice - go for the Delta or Dewalt.

The model is listed as Delta 40-690.
www.deltaportercable.com
. Delta and Dewalt are owned by the same company. Although they cost the same, you get the stand and light with the Delta. The stand also has an adjustment to raise the back of the saw if you are so inclined. (some scrollers like that - I do not). Since this is a new saw, there may be deals available out there. Check the website to see who carries it in your area. I have not put my hands on this saw but I have used the Dewalt. Although I prefer my excalibur, This would certainly be my second choice.

If you have an Acme Electric Tool Crib in your area, they handle dewalt and will match Grizzle's price, At least they did in my case. No shipping no waitin.

I bought my 788 from Rockler on Black Friday ( the day after Thanksgiving ) last year for 449.00. With light and stand. Great saw.
