Some work from me......finally
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:01:57 pm »
I haven't posted any work here in quite awhile so I thought I would show some now.
I entered a contest on another site for making "Salt & Pepper Shakers". Not having a lathe, of course I had to make mine using my scroll saw.
The are fairly simple and not at all hard to make but, I enjoyed the challange and got a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and a 6th place finish.
Hope you enjoy seeing them and it sparks someone into thinking "Outside The Lines".

The first one I made is made of maple and I call it "The Pot Belly Stove".

Number two is cherry and it is called "The Apple Core".

For my third try, I went back to my old stand by, plywood. It is "The Square Egg"

On the fourth, a friend gave me some zebra wood and I got crazy on the design. It ended up looking more like "Tiger wood" So I called it "The Orental".

Hope you enjoy them and all comments good or bad welcome.

Awesome job, Rog.  How do they "screw" together to fill.  These are really neat.

I was asked how to fill the salt & pepper shakers......

Well, DOH!!!! I use the little holes in the top of course!

Nah, I'm just kidding...

I drill a recess in the bottom with a forstner bit, then a 5/16" hole in the center of that, and cut off the bottom to drill the deeper inside hole with a forstner bit and re-glue the bottom to the block.  The 5/16 hole is for a cork to keep the salt inside. It is not the best way of doing it but, it works.
Anyway, these things are more for display than use altho they can be used.
There are grinder parts available to make S & P grinders available but, at the time, I didn't know where to get them.

Hope that helps.

About time you shared your talent with us mere mortals.  ;)  Nicely done.

Very, very cool. I really love the plywood shakers. How do you get them so smooth?

I keep being surprised here by how great plywood can look from the side.  One of these days I am definitely going to have to do something with that look.

Really nice work.
