pattern method
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:28:25 am »
I'm just getting started in Intarsia ans have what maybe a elementary question.  Who uses cut & paste and who traces the pattern on the wood--different schools of thought. I have tried both but my tracing ability leaves a lot to be desired. cut and paste seems to work okay. maybe it's just i need more time doing it to get it right for me--just don't know which way to go--Richard aka thumbs

I use the "Trace" method only I trace onto "Tracing Paper" and fasten it to the wood.

I'll send you the same email I sent another member of this forum yesterday, answering the same question, explaining the method I use.

Al, talk about a bolt of lightning hitting you--those are great instructions and make all the sense in the world. It solves a lot of questions about fitting pieces together.I have several pads of tracing paper so off I go--thanks so much for the info- It sure beats making 5-6 copies of the pattern--Richard aka thumbs

Hi Al, There must be a reason you didn't post it, but I, too, would like the e-mail.  I would love to know your secret. julief36@yahoo.com  I strugle with it sometimes.  That is why I have only done a few intarsias.

For Dan (dgman)

I am not a technical writer and what I put together was, in my estimation, a hurried and crude answer to the question that was asked.  If I had known I was going to post it in the forum I would have spent more time developing it.

And, my not posting it on the forum has nothing to do with it being a secret as alluded to in another post!

Some of the greatest joy I get out of making Intarsias is sharing what knowledge I?ve acquired over the past eighteen years with others. I have received several requests, other than the ones posted, and really appreciate the feedback I've received.

Thanks, Al
Al

I didn't think it was a secret - I just thought it might be lengthy or complicated.  I believe it is your work that I have seen in magazines and if it is - the instructions you give are easy to follow.  I have long admired the talent you have for selecting the wood and grain direction to put your pieces together.  I came across the "oh so full" pattern in a past magazine the other day and might just give it a try.

Al, I have completed one and working on an other and based on the responses to your e-mailed instructions, I believe I could definitely benefit from those instructions - please send me a copy of that e-mail!

Thank you,

Pieter
