Earthquake in NZ
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:44:18 pm »
I just heard on the CBS Nightly News that there was an earthquake, (a magnitude 7), in NewZealand. Isn't that where Dawie & Jimbo live? If so. Has anybody heard from them? Dave

From the 'net'....
The huge earthquake that rocked New Zealand?s South Island early Saturday damaged buildings, cut out power and shut the Christchurch airport, according to wire reports and the airport?s website. At least two serious injuries were reported from the quake.

Passengers should not travel to Christchurch International Airport (CHC) until further notice, and they should contact their airline for instructions on rescheduling flights, the airport?s website said. The airport was scheduled to remain shut until at least 1 p.m. Saturday local time while terminals, runways and navigation systems were being checked for damage.

Air New Zealand posted an advisory saying that it would book passengers on the next available flights as soon as the airport reopens. Check the airline?s website for updates.

GeoNet, an earthquake-tracking website run by New Zealand?s Earthquake Commission and GNS Science, revised the magnitude of the quake from initial reports of a 7.4 down to a 7.1. The quake hit about 20 miles west of Christchurch, the largest city on South Island.

Jimbo is in Wellington, across the bay from ChristChurch so he should be OK....
try <maps.google.com/new zealand> for approximate location...

According to my best estimate Jimbo should be about 200 miles from the quake site!

NZ is split in to 3 islands north south and a tiny island in the far south called Stewart island, I live in the bottom of the north island Wellington, Christ Church is in the south island, the quake was 7.4 and it was centered in the mid city area I have not heard how much damage or if any lives were lost.
Thanks for all your concern it is much appreciated, I will keep you informed if you wish I know another member of this forum lives there but do not know him
Jimbo
