Padauk - does this work well for scroll sawing?

Has anyone here used a wood called Padauk?

It has a really neat red colour.

I did a little bit with it, and I am not sure the back of the pattern didn't get some tear out - but then again, I was not using a blade with reverse teeth.

I have used it. It is very hard and pretty. You need to put packaging tape on both sides to help reduce burning of the blade. Yes - reverse-tooth blades would be desirable. Also - please wear a mask. While it smells almost sweet (somewhat like coconut!) it is very toxic, as are most hardwoods. Please respect that and wear a mask while cutting.

Paduk is like Shelia has mentioned very hard and the sawdust is toxic.  It also especially if very fine can get everywhere so please use filters when possible.

I did not know that the wood could be toxic.  It certainly leaves very fine sawdust!

I use it quite often as it's easy to cut and finishes well.  It does have a tendency to warp and cup more than many woods.  Also, that pretty color will not stay that way over time, but will become much more brown.  I don't use packing tape at all, and have never had any problems with tearout.  I use either a Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #1 or an Olson Mach 3...and make sure it's nice and sharp.
