Scrolling on Cherry Wood

I attempted to scroll a pattern using cherry wood.  Using a flying dutchman scroll reverse No. 5 blade, the cherry wood (3/4") burned like crazy and almost welded its self together.  My questions - What did I do wrong?  Is cherry wood not an acceptable wood for scrolling? Thank You

Hi.

If you cover the piece with postal packaging tape (the clear type - that is about 2" wide) then it helps considerably when scrolling any type of hardwood (including cherry) from burning. The adhesive on the tape helps lubricate the blade and keep it cooler. It really works wonders. I tape both sides if the wood is considerably dense. But try applying a layer of it over your pattern to one side and see if that helps. I am sure it will. Good luck, Sheila

I cover the wood with painter's tape or clear shelf liner then glue the pattern on.  I also slow the blade speed down a bit.

Yeah, what Larry said. Works well for me, too.
Just finished 6 crosses, all Sheila Landry designs, all in cherry and didn't have any problems.
I love Sheila, and I am not unfond off Keith. (That is a line from "King of the Hill")

Cheer is known for burning. In addition to the tapes, use new blades, change them frequently, and don't force the blade to cut on the turns. Good luck

Yes, the tape will help some.
Yes, cherry wood tends to burn a lot easier than most woods.
What causes cherry t burn ?...HEAT....So slow down the blade speed a little, slow down the feed rate a little and change the blade a little more often.
I love cherry wood and have used it quit often in a lot of my wood working projects.
