First intarsia job
« on: January 24, 2016, 06:20:21 am »
I'm about to start my first intarsia job.  It may be a silly question - OK no question is silly.

I realise that any thickness of timber can be used within reason but generally from what I've seen no thickness is stated in a plan.  It seems to me that about 3/4 inch (18 mm) is generally the thickness used.  Is this so?

I usually always start with 3/4 dressed lumber.

I have done appliques and ornaments that I start with less.

I started with a book by Judy Gale Roberts and all her patterns are 3/4.

Also, check out Bruce Worthington as he has an e-book instruction book at http://www.intarsia.net/

Good Luck

Hi Tony,
I too usually start with 3/4" wood and if i need anything thicker on a pattern than that then I use riser blocks on the back or if I have some thicker pieces of the same wood just cut the piece needed.
Look forward to seeing your first piece and I'm sure you will do many more as its very addictive
Cheers

My wood stock is primarily 1" thick which is what I like. 1" gives me more options when it comes to creating depth in the piece.
See the Harvest Moon that I just posted. everything started at 1" except for the Moon which was 3/8", I added a 1/4 shims to several areas to add more depth.
If you are just starting out I recommend 3/4" because you can find that fairly easy
