Not a scroll saw project - Custom acoustic guitar
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:52:18 am »
I've always wanted to make my own guitar, but it's so intimidating!I finally went for it. Took over a month, but I'm limited on how much I can do at a time due to health issues.

I made this from a partial kit. When I say kit though, I use the term loosely. I got pre-bent sides and a very rough shaped neck along with wood materials and a bag of hardware. Other than that, it's all from scratch. I used Hawaiian Koa wood and the pictures don't do the wood justice. It's almost iridescent in the light.

First link is to the finished pictures:

And the second link is the build process pictures:

Enjoy!

Ray that is a very pretty guitar.  Its shape is not what I am used to seeing on one though.  It kinda looks to me like an oversized mandolin, however I am no expert on the subject. Could it be a Portuguese Mandolin called a bandolim?

Thanks everyone! Always nice to hear possitive feedback.

DW It's called the Renaissance Guitar because it's design is inspired from the renaissance era. It's actually shaped like an old time lute. I was originally going to build a standard shaped one, but I already have one of those and I love renaissance stuff.

That is totally awesome.  My 14 year old grandson asked me to help him build an arch top solid body electric.  We are starting from mahogany blanks for the body and neck and maple for the arch top.  I am totally intimidated and inspired by what you have done.  This will stretch anything I have ever done and will pleased if we are able to be somewhere near the skill and talent which is evident in yours.

Thank you everyone!
I really enjoyed building the guitar and it may be the most satisfying wood project I've done.
