Cuckoo Clock finally finished!
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:27:36 pm »
Some of you probably read about my trials and tribulations with this clock.  In a nutshell, I put it together wrong.  Fortunately, a wonderful co-worker who is also a woodworker with a lot more experience than me was able to help me get the thing apart enough so that I could correct the mistake.  I did have to re-cut one piece completely, sand off a lot of residual glue, reassemble the thing and then refinish it.  I put most of the hardware in it last night and finished it this evening.  I wish I post the video I took of it doing the whole cuckoo thing but this will have to do.

I'm happy to hear you could make the fixes - that sounded like a heart-breaker when you first posted it. Nicely done.

Now that is a case of perseverance paying off. It is one thing to make firewood from mistakes but it is a totally another to make a memory out of something that may have become firewood. Great work. Thanks for sharing.

WOW!!!  This gives me hope!  I was so sad when I read your first post about this clock, it was my first week on the forum.  I was kinda asking myself what I'd gotten myself into.  Now all I can say is
WOW!!! Beautiful job Becky.

Thanks everyone.  It was really a relief to be able to repair instead of replace.  It really wasn't that difficult of a pattern to cut but I'm just as glad not to have to do it again.

Lenny, my take-away from this project (well, the main one of several) is to be really careful to follow the instructions during assembly!  In spite of being spared the annoyance and expense of making a whole new clock, I don't think I'll forget that lesson any time soon and it is probably a good reminder for others.  You think you know how it all needs to go but I'll sure be double-checking in the future!

Judy, the pattern is by Dirk Boelman at http://theartfactory.com/ . I really love his patterns.  I find them easy to work with and generally forgiving.  If you decide to make this clock, I'd suggest using smaller eye screws than the ones they supply with the parts kit.  I couldn't get it to work with the ones they provided but when I tried the small ones I use for ornaments, it was fine.
