Celebrate Sawyers' Day March 19 2014
« on: February 20, 2014, 11:51:55 pm »
Late last year we talked about creating a holiday of our own to celebrate our great hobby. It was suggested that it be called Sawyers' Day in honor of the 19th century artisans that spent the day in a pit pulling on one end of a big saw, and that it be held on March 19th, the feast day of St. Joseph, patron saint of carpenters and fathers.

That's a month off now. I'm still in. I suggest we handle it like our Christmas exchange but instead of tree ornaments, we exchange something we made related to woodworking - use your imagination but keep it small enough to mail.

Anyone that's interested can send me an email (RMHayes@RMHayes.US) with subject "Sawyers' Day" and in the body of the email put
    Your Real Name
    Your forum name
    Your mailing address
I'll select a partner and return it to your email ASAP. We don't have that much time so be quick if you want in. I hope a lot of you do.

If you don't use email, send me a PM with the same info and I'll return your partner by PM.

Happy Sawyers' Day!

Ok so let me get this right.  It is to be something that we have made out of wood but not a Christmas ornament, righ?

Right - It could be a hanging thing like an ornament, but not with a Christmas theme. The theme would be something related to woodworking and particularly to scrolling. It might sit on your desk, bedside table, kitchen counter top, or hold you cell pone or TV remote. It might be a toy, a  bowl, a box, a bank, inlay, marquetry, intarsia, anything that we show on the forum, or something completely different, but it should relate to the hobby we share to celebrate Sawyers' Day. It doesn't need to be an image of a woodworker or tool, but those would be great to see. It be a functional thing made by hand from wood, like Steve's "cell phone amplifier" - a nice mix of wood and work to make something that looks great and you use regularly.

I'd hope any exchanged items would also be posted like we did for the Christmas exchange.

I will make up pairs this weekend and send them out so you have time to make the exchange. I did not get a lot of responses yet, so anyone else interested, please send me an email (see start of this thread) and I'll get you on the list.

Thanks.

This morning I sent out (by email) the contacts for sending your Sawyers' Day 2014 exchange projects. We are trying for a March 19 holiday, so get it in the mail as soon as you can.

Thanks for those who are participating. I hope this can be an annual event.

If I missed anyone, let me know.

Thanks Marcel. Note there is a new thread under the Brag Forum to pick up photos of exchanges. Can't wait to see them.

Meanwhile, Have a Dusty Sawyers' Day.

did noticed that, maybe we admire the works there, but in the "expecting" face we keep us posting here?
19-3 is coming closer, so I'll watch the mailman every day ;)
