New bandsaw
« on: February 19, 2014, 06:47:39 pm »
Thinking about getting the grizzly go555 saw. Don't need anything real big, I like to scroolsaw and don't need to do resaw bigger than 6". $600 is my budget. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Had a topic on band saws not long ago. Scroll down and look for Best Band saw. Several comments and good advise from other members .

I got the Griz saw a few years ago and I like.  I also got the resaw kit which makes it able to cut a thicker piece of wood but haven't even installed it yet.  I do make band saw boxes and have no problem with them.  Good Luck :)  :)

I got the 14" Grizzly g0555X with the 6" riser 3 years ago and have not regretted it one bit. I love it and it is a solid workhorse of a machinery. I would recommend it highly.

Whatever brand of bandsaw you get, the two important variables are the setup and the blades.  Either go to youtube and search for Alex Snodgrass's video on bandsaw setup or catch him at on of the annual woodworking shows.  He know that stuff inside and out.  He also sells videos on making bandsaw boxes and other things through Carter.  There are several blade manufacturers.  Be sure to fit the blade to your need, and don't scrimp on the cost.  I like the Carter blades, but the timberwolf blades get good reviews also.

Here is this from youtube from grizzly talks about the 14 inch saw line, and starts with the go555 which I am wanting and to me watching this vid seems like a good saw to have, and also does have the riser block option, listen when he turns it on, pretty quiet running saw.

I bought my GO555 in 2008 and it has served me well.  I have replaced the blade guide bearings with inexpensive bearings I bought locally.  I have the riser and use carbide blades to do a lot of 8" re-sawing. Cedar, oak, maple and walnut.

I got the G1019 Griz just before the G0555 came out.  I also got the resaw or rizer  kit.  I have cut several band saw boxes with no problems, except the last one.  I cut thru a five inch thick block with a 3/16th blade.  I wasn't paying enough attention and the blade got so hot it burned the tires on the wheels.  I am telling this so no one else makes that mistake.  But this has been over 10 years of use so I don't feel so bad.  I have not had to spent a dive before this on it except for extra blades for different uses. The saw is no longer carried but it is still good for me.
