PROFOUNDLY DISCONNECTED?
« on: November 21, 2013, 09:29:18 pm »
I have always like Mike Rowe and the shows he has helped produced or been a part of. ( Dirty Jobs and Deadliest catch to name a few)There is finally a person who has been speaking up that it is ok to be a skilled laborer. As parent, teachers, and counselors we have pushed for years that you needed to have a 4 year collage degree to make it in life. The time has come that we have taken those things that kept so many youth in schools out of the curriculum. Most of us have taken up our hobbies with some basic knowledge  of wood working. Some areas have started addressing this failure of skilled work force in America.
To see what Mike Rowe is doing click on the link below. Make a career teach a kid.

?The S.W.E.A.T. Pledge?

(Skill & Work Ethic Aren?t Taboo)

1. I believe that I have won the greatest lottery of all time. I am alive. I walk the Earth. I live in America. Above all things, I am grateful.

2. I believe that I am entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing more. I also understand that ?happiness? and the ?pursuit of happiness? are not the same thing.

3. I believe there is no such thing as a ?bad job.? I believe that all jobs are opportunities, and it?s up to me to make the best of them.

4. I do not ?follow my passion.? I bring it with me. I believe that any job can be done with passion and enthusiasm.

5. I deplore debt, and do all I can to avoid it. I would rather live in a tent and eat beans than borrow money to pay for a lifestyle I can?t afford.

6. I believe that my safety is my responsibility. I understand that being in ?compliance? does not necessarily mean I?m out of danger.

7. I believe the best way to distinguish myself at work is to show up early, stay late, and cheerfully volunteer for every crappy task there is.

8. I believe the most annoying sounds in the world are whining and complaining. I will never make them. If I am unhappy in my work, I will either find a new job, or find a way to be happy.

9. I believe that my education is my responsibility, and absolutely critical to my success. I am resolved to learn as much as I can from whatever source is available to me. I will never stop learning, and understand that library cards are free.

10. I believe that I am a product of my choices ? not my circumstances. I will never blame anyone for my shortcomings or the challenges I face. And I will never accept the credit for something I didn?t do.

11. I understand the world is not fair, and I?m OK with that. I do not resent the success of others.

12. I believe that all people are created equal. I also believe that all people make choices. Some choose to be lazy. Some choose to sleep in. I choose to work my butt off.

On my honor, I hereby affirm the above statements to be an accurate summation of my personal worldview. I promise to live by them.

Before I had my kids I worked in an office then I was at home for the next 10 years.  Then a job became available at the local Primary school were my daughters went so I applied for the job. It was a cleaning/janitor job.  I did not get it straight away but within a year I was in the door.  Whenever I gave my occupation as cleaner I would quite often get a look that said you are beneath me but I didn't care that was my school and I took pride in keeping it clean.  I was there for almost 25 years and since I have left I have been asked 3 times to go back. But this is my time now, it is time to give someone else the chance to make it their school and to be as proud of it as I was.

That is the best kind of job, one that you enjoy doing and doing it with pride.  I have been making and adjusing eyeglasses since 1967 and truly enjoy the work and meeting people.  Jeff44

Anyone who has a job and takes pride in their work is to be respected no matter the job.
I do take exception with Mike Rowe when he denigrates college degrees.  Respect should be mutual.

I agree. When America was bombarded with "No child left behind" it seems that the push for higher education came with higher tuition. Not sure what the link is there, but I think if industries (such as the IT world) provided training they could do it at a lower cost, have the workforce built up faster, and relieve the burden of college debt behind.

Thanks for your post king310.

The "everyone needs college" chant came from the Vietnam era draft exemption for college students. Before that, universities were for training in the professions. As a result, every dog who'd rather not hunt signed up for a low cost, low value education. Those low value "students" migrated into and contaminated the university staff and are the reason that the ONLY non-racial demographic that was strongly Democrat in 2012 was the elite post-graduate class. They have been indoctrinated and will be the source of essentially all school books for the coming generation of students.

If you value any accuracy in the schooling of your grandchildren, start saving newspaper clippings so you can preserve the truth of this time in history. In 10 years they will not take your word for what happened in 2013. Their e-books will spin a totally different tale.

If you want proof, ask a grandkid for his or her American History book and look in the index for Vietnam.

University schooling should not be condemned - we still need the professions just as we still need the skilled craftsmen. In particular, we need to see that our coming generations are trained in fields that cannot be exported to $2/day labor in India.

Make your workshop a model of self sufficiency, thrift, and safety, and share its treasures with the young around you.
