Communicating from the 'shop'!
« on: June 28, 2010, 05:02:52 pm »
Do any of you do as I do and take your laptop or 'netbook' into the shop?

My netbook is wireless networked and WIFI capable.
I'm just close enough to our local 'Park' office that I can use the city's WIFI or my own wireless network.
Pretty slick!

However, it is something else I have to keep the sawdust out of!!!

Hate to say...but when I head to the basement to scroll...I normally don't even hear the phone ring.  It's just me, the saw and the radio.  Good thing there is a clock down there or I wouldn't even know what time it is!

Some of the folks here make money by selling their 'wares'.
I pick up spare bucks by 'consulting' and some computer instruction so I have to remain in touch.
I never know when a 'client' that I have set up or a student may have a problem so I keep my 'puter close and ON at all times.
Several are businesses that I have set up for 'remote access' service so if they call I can jump right into their screen and see what the problem is and try to solve it immediately.
The only time I am really out of touch is when I am out of town or asleep and I can help when out of town if I can find a WIFI hotspot.
Keeps me in wood!

Doing Intarsia projects I create so much sanding dust I'd be afraid to take my computer out in the shop!

I do have a laptop but it stays inside. When I'm in the shop, (garage) I'm to busy working on projects to bother with the computer. When I come in to take a break, then I will check in.

Yes I take my laptop in the shop and I have my own wireless network. I also have a Stereo System/CD, Cable TV, VCR/DVD, Surround Sound, Small Fridge, Rocking Chair, Heat and AC.  8)

My bed is in my bedroom and my sink is in my bathroom & kitchen. My Shop is only 50' behind my house.  8)    Built it myself over 10 years ago.  8)

Janet - you might investigate one of the little split heat pump systems.  Our ACE Hardware carries them here.  I had one put in last summer and it keeps my workshop nice in cool even when its 105+ out and nice heat in the winter.  They only require a 3" access hole through the wall and 110V.  You can barely hear the compressor run.  My workspace is 16x24.  Only took about 2 hours to install.

Sounds nice!  I'll look into that someday when I have some extra $$$.

My scroll saw, band saw and table saw are in one shop which is a 40' shipping container in my backyard, it has plenty of heat and ac too, heat this time of year and ac in the winter!!!! Radial arm saw, miter saw and router table are in another building about a 1/4 mile away on our property. Too dusty for a computer in either one, plus I get enough online time at work, so I seldom turn mine on at home.
