Captain Kirk to go with EIEIO's Spock
« on: October 17, 2013, 04:38:35 am »
My o/h keeps asking when I am going to do a Captain Kirk to complement the Spock one, if anyone would care to oblige.

I always try to make a pattern myself before requesting but portraits have me beat, no matter how often I try.

Martin.

martin - coming back from vacation today. I'm at Monterey (California) Airport waiting for a flight. I'll see what I can come up with when I'm back.

Thanks, Ray. I think maybe the detail in the hair is probably beyond my capabilities.

I just made this one, but I haven't managed to capture his faint quizzical smile.

Another I had a go at. I think this one looks more like him than my last one.

Hair is the hardest part of making these patterns look realistic. After that steam bus I'd think you could handle the hair just fine. It is a fair amount of cutting, but it will add a lot to the image. Spock's hair was a lot easier. :)

You patterns look pretty good to me. Why not just pick one and cut it?

Ray, my wife, and myself come to that, like the simplistic look of the Spock one you did, it's very effective, so I wanted one to complement it. I might cut the second one I did and see how it comes out. The wife likes that one anyway, and it's for her. The first pattern I made looks like Steve Hackett out of Genesis. Maybe :)

I've got some 6mm MDF to waste so I'll more than likely have a go at yours as well if only to see if your faith in me is justified. ;D

Cheers,
Martin.

Martin - I know what you mean about the Spock - that simplicity is attractive. I had a James Cagney that I felt the same about (too hard to cut the hair) but I was really happy with the result. This started as one of saggioculo's sketches.

If you cut a Kirk, please post a photo.

Yep, that's the minimalistic effect I like where the likeness is still obvious.

Martin.
