How to repair table on scroll saw

I recently posted that I was a new member and new to scroll sawing and was getting a excalibur scroll saw. I ordered the 21" from Woodcraft for $850 roughly. It said it already shipped and is on its way. Then while chatting with my father, he tells me there is one buried under some stuff somewhere in our storage shed that I didn't know about. Sure enough, looked around in there and under some stuff was a 16" Delta scroll saw in a box. I tried canceling my order from Woodcraft but they said it already shipped  . Now I will just have to refuse to accept the order their customer service said and it will be returned to them. I will take the 16" Delta over the $850 Excalibur since it will be my first saw and it is free haha  . The deal is the saw was sitting in the storage shed and the table is covered about 80% rust, how do I get it cleaned up to a smooth table? Do I need to sand it down and then polish it with some metal polish or what would be best?

My suggestion is go through the grits with sand paper. Rough to get the caked on stuff off, then fine grit to make it shine again. You may want to use WD-40 to help with the process of taking off the rust. After you have the rust off, use a paste wax to protect the surface. Funny I owned a Vega years ago, It was the worst car I have ever owned.

I would start with about a 60 or 80 grit, get it cleaned up then step down to about a 100 then step down to 220 on a final to get it really smooth.

When the table is cleaned up, try  DuPont TEFLON Non-Stick Dry Film Lubricant.  It comes in a 4 oz bottle and is easy to apply.  Instructions are sketchy, so keep it shaken.  I bought it at Lowe's.  I love it.

I have that stuff it does work good, but does not stay on long I found I had to apply it often to keep the top slick.

I had a similar problem with rust coming on the table after many years of use.  I cleaned it up as best as possible.  Then I got a scrap piece of arborite, cut it to the size and shape of the table, and attached it with 2-way tape.  Has worked great for many years now, and hasn't come off.
