I use blue painters tape then glue the patter to that, peels off easy and don't have to use or smell any chemicals on the wood.

If I stack cut, I use my brad nailer, 1/4 wood it will work 3 stack with the shortest 5/8 brad nails but will punch though if not careful, can get 4 high but have to put couple nails in back, nail in waste or at the 4 corners to hold together then affix the pattern and nail some more if have to keeps stack nice and tight.
