You don't look older than I am, so I'm sure you can pick it up if you're comfortable with your computer.
I read the article. It will give you a start, but it is different than what I've been doing, and it does not use Inkscape. The Inkscape step is critical in my opinion. And I was not that impressed with the article's final pattern considering the quality of the starting picture. It does give some good hints - don't hesitate to rearrange the picture to look better than the original, eliminate the background, and even use 2 different pictures to get good images of two people.
I'll watch for the Studebaker.
