I've had my scroll saw a month or so now and all my metal working tools and my motorbike are covered in sawdust. (grrr) One of my problems, especially as I don't drive 4 wheels, is getting hold of wood to mangle, so my first decent piece is cut from a piece of laminate flooring I'd acquired somwhere.
I've not had much experience (none in fact) for the intricate bits, so I used a spiral blade and it works for me, I think I only made one mistake.

It's a long way from what I have been jealously looking at on the forum, but it's mine and I'm proud of it, so I have to show it off.

Martin that's damn great for a first up attempt, and with spirals.
Laminate flooring is hard on blades. I personally wood have run the grain the other way but hey that's me.

that's excellent work especially as it's your first piece and done with spirals, I only ever use spirals when there is no other alternative as I can't get on with them. You seem to have mastered them on your first attempt.

Merlin, I had no option on which way the grain went as the piece of flooring was only big enough for it to fit one way. I do realise though that grain direction is something I need to take note of. Reducing the pattern slightly would have made it fit, but I didn't think of that.

The place I bought the scroll saw had limited stock of blades, so the spiral blade was more luck than judgement, although I did find it easy to use.

Ya know, when I first saw that pattern in my email, I couldn't understand why Steve din't make that oval into a fish bowl.?

Martin I think you have done great!  For most of us we have made a bit of designer firewood from time to time so don't worry about it.  Most "mistakes" are only noticeable by two people You and the Designer, few scrollers cut the pattern exactly as it was designed.  Most of us make changes to accommodate skill level, perhaps make a piece stronger that kind of thing.  Anyway great work and thanks for sharing this with us.

Nice work. looks great. DW is right on the money. nobody will notice your "one mistake". Dont be a fool (like me) and point them out to anybody. Still to this day i always show my work to my wife, than say "yeah but did you see this?" dont get into that habit. It looks great just the way it is. Nice job.

btw, i just got done cutting one of the three patterns that were included. I like your choice of paper.

Martin - Beautiful cutting, with a side note.  There's hope for your metal tools & bike. The combination of laminate flooring & spiral cutting blades produces probable the most sawdust possible. An old sheet or plastic over other tools & the bike will help but most of all don't forget a dust mask for yourself.  Again- great piece - hope you got the bug.
