Ok as far as catalogs I try and stay away from them as much as possible and go to the designers when buying patterns. Just do a google on scroll saw patterns and you'll find a few. The magazines I say there are two, "Creative Woodworking and Crafts" and "Scrollsaw" can't remember off the top of my head the rest of the 2nd one's title. It's put out by fox chapel and they are also a great source for books. I would suggest mayb the "scrollsaw handbook" for starters. You can go to this link: www.foxchapel.com and get more info on the 2nd magazine and also see what books there are. Welcome to the fun and exciting world of Scrollsaw Woodworking.

Scrollsaw Woodworking and crafts is a good one. It will give you some tips and free patterns. Fox chapel has many other great publications about what interest  you. Just like Steves blog spot, many different scrollers.

I found Creative Woodworking and Crafts at our local Wal Mart.

Picked up the past two issues for $6.99 each. It has many patterns with instructions and photos. Very easy to follow. I have several finished projects now and have learned a bunch doing them.

The projects range from boxes to portraits and Intarsia so there is a bit of everything.

I found lots of sites selling the patterns in the magazine for $5.00 to around $8.00 each so for seven dollars it's a great value.

Gramps,
You'll find that most of us here try to go direct to the pattern designer when purchasing patterns, however, that's not always possible.  The bad part about going through the pattern distributors, is how they treat the pattern designers.  Some of the distributors have taken it upon themselves to modify the patterns and the pattern instructions to suit there own needs, without regard to what the pattern designer intended the user to see.
You may note that our very own Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) produces some beautiful patterns, but you may notice that her patterns are only sold through the Wooden Teddy Bear, and not through Scroller.  There's a reason for that, and it doesn't reflect well upon Scroller!  In the end though, just go to her site and buy direct from her.  That way she gets ALL the money for all her (and Keith's) hard work.  Steve has many links on his home page that will take you to some of the designers' sites.  Check them out, and if you can't find a site for the designer of a specific pattern, just ask here.  We can probably track down the designer for you!

Hope this helps

It's my experience, reading this forum every day is the best source of scrolling information.  Everything from blades, machines, woods, tips and tricks.   View the videos, and check out Steve's FREE patterns. Ofcourse, practice, practice, practice.
