Removing patterns

I know I've read replies to this question before - but my search proved unsuccessful.  I've applied my pattern to a painted and sealed blank & then cutout the puzzle.  I used 77 photo mount spray with what I thought was an extended dry time before applying the pattern.
I've done this approach successfully before. The pieces are small and will take forever to scrape them clean and I'll loose some of the paint job.  Was it mineral sprites sprayed on - for how long?  I'd even use the microwave [after my wife went to bed] but again for how long?  Thanks in advance again - Brian

I use a rag, dampened with mineral spirits to apply the mineral spirits. I just dab it on and leave it for a few seconds and the pattern remnants come right off. I have never used the micro but I have heard that others do use it. Make sure you dispose of the rag safely because I am told that it can spontaneously combust.

Hey Brian, I don't think I would of put a pattern over a painted blank. Next time apply some blue painters tape over the blank, then the pattern over that. Then once cut, the tape and pattern will peal right off. In the mean time, try using a heat gun or a hair drier on the pattern. Start heating at a corner. You may have to use a sharp knife to pry up the corner. One you have the corner up, the rest will come up while heating it. Good luck!

Thanks fellas -  I've cleaned up the pieces with mineral spirits. I applied the ms's to one or two pieces at a time - then used a sharp blade to lift one corner of the 1st piece. This method works like a charm.  PS - I've tried the tape under the pattern and the tape sticks to good. I find the tape adheres well and lifts some of the weaker painted grain. I have the blue tape and I know that different tapes have different release times - I might be using a tape that holds to firmly after time [long project time].  If any one knows of a tape with a shorter release time, I like to know.  Thanks  Brian

I find that the purple painters tape works much better than the blue. Costs a little more but it is worth it. I can only find it at ACE hardware.

I use spray glue, just less of it so the pattern wont get stuck.

I'm still a believer in putting down painters tape on my wood first and then a good bond spray glue on my pattern.  The tempoary ones just don't stay down for me and I wind up with the notorious pattern flapping right at the critical part of my cut.  the painters tape peels off easily and leaves no sticky residue behind.  If you insist on glueing the pattern directly to the wood, mineral spirits works as a good cleanup.

I use the Green painters tape.  It works just as good as the blue but comes off really easy.  I have let it sit for a couple of days and it still comes off easy.  I don't think it would peal off your paint either.

When I need to remove a pattern, I place it in the microwave for about 15 - 20 seconds.  It lifts off easily with no sticky residue.

I also use blue painters tape for all projects.  Never had a problem with it. Always had bad luck applying pattern directly to wood.

I found a "repositionable glue" in a spray can, I spray the back of the pattern, leave it for a minute then place it on the wood. After cutting the wood, I just peel the pattern off with no residue. I have tried the painters tape, but the dust extraction holes on the EX21 table tend to drag the tape off if cutting near the edge. so I only use that to stack cut, as it leaves the table sticky when it gets dragged off the underside of my work.

I use re-positional spray glue and put 2" wide clear selotape on top comes off easy.

Still experimenting with this myself.

When putting pattern directly on wood I had the best luck removing it by placing a.paper towel moistened with mineral spirits over it for about 30 seconds. It lifted the pattern, on tracing paper, easily and then a quick wipe with the towel removed any traces of glue. This worked even better on wood sealed with a few coats of spray on shellac first.

I tried carbon paper and tracing the pattern directly onto the wood but the grain made for some wavy lines.

I prefer a.layer of clear packing tape, apply pattern to that, then another layer of clear tape. Just what I've had the best luck with in my limited experience's.
