Navy "Fouled Anchor" emblem....
« on: December 13, 2012, 06:59:57 pm »
I'm looking for a Navy "Fouled Anchor" insignia ... simple pattern that someone wants as a favor.
I've seen one somewhere but cannot remember where.

Any leads will be appreciated.

The illustration shows the anchor line wrapped around the anchor itself which would be an example of poor seamanship! This would make it harder to lower or raise the anchor.
The story is that the "chiefs" chose that symbol since their position is as teachers and mentors to the lower rated seamen and this is an example of what they are trying to teach them to avoid. The consensus is that this is a myth!
But as I have heard, the "chiefs" really run the ship and the Navy in general so they are pretty proud of their positions.
You can get the full story on 'wikipedia'...
OR maybe 'jblock' will give us his take on the tradition.

GB, thats pretty much the way I heard and seen it. The Chiefs are the backbone of the Navy. While I like the anchor, the Chief's logo is now a skull in a Chiefs hat. Don't know nothing about that. It could have at least been a goat in a Chief's hat. Would fall more in line with the Goat Locker (Chief's Mess).

For a Master Sgt I use the insignia. It can be found on just about any military site. But just in cas, here.
