New Intarsia Question. Frame or no frame?
« on: December 04, 2012, 06:14:07 pm »
I'm making this Intarsia as a Christmas present and for one of the few times I'm undecided whether to put a frame around it or leave it as is and finish it.   I'm making it from a picture of their dog, a Pit Bull.

Help me out with some recommendations please.

Thanks, Al

Looks great.

I prefer a frame if it is doesn't take away from the art work.

I would not put a frame on it because almost all painted art or even prints are displayed with a frame.  Intarsia is unique and I think it should be displayed in a unique way.  Intarsia with a frame may look like painted art. No frame draws attention to it... Just my opinion.  Very nice job on the dog by the way!

I had to see it framed out, so I dropped your piece into my print shop program.... I kinda like it framed.

I have a few of my intarsia framed and I found they look good only if you have the frame as part of the intarsia, like a dogs nose sticking out of the picture or a flower or stem going out of the frame.  Tried to find a copy of photo of them so you would know what I am talking about but most of them were on the computer that burned.  :(:(:(

Hey Al, I like the shape of the frame you have drawn up. I do not think it would distract from the art. I  think it would add to the overall project.

I would finish it by making an intarsia frame (like you have drawn) and fill it in with a lighter wood between the dog and frame.  Also bump out the dog to make it "pop" more.

But then I don't do intarsia, so what do I know?  :)

Love the dog but yes it does need a frame, a round one in darker wood should look good.

In this case, I think a frame will finish it off nicely.  It is a magnificent piece but looks unfinished to me.

Another great looking project Al. I think in the end a frame would tie it all together.

nice piece but after seeing it in a frame it looks unfinished without it.

definitely frame it, I would say in a darker wood to set it off nicely.

Obviously you figured out a frame for sure on this one. The final piece looks fantastic.
