Portrait out of Veneer?
« on: October 25, 2012, 11:05:54 am »
Has anyone heard of or has cut a Portrait out of a sheet of Veneer?
Not sure I would want to try this, but would LOVE to hear all of your Feelings.
                                                          Thanks....  Danny  :+}

Hey Danny, I have not cut a portrait out of veneer, but I have cut book marks with cut designs out of veneer. You do want to use 1/8" Baltic birch on top and bottom of your "stack" for better control and to prevent chip out.
I don't think that the thin material will have enough contrast with the backer board to make it interesting though.

I'm new to scroll sawing but I have cut a couple of portrait style pieces from veneer. I used spray glue to fix the veneer to some 6mm mdf and cut the whole thing. If you just want to cut veneer I would sandwich it between two pieces of sacrificial material first. This is the portrait I did in figured sycamore : http://www.flickr.com/photos/77880390@N02/8035312850/in/photostream

Thanks Char for letting us see your pictures.  You gave Veneer hope (I think)
Like take wood with not much grain (like BB) (TO ME) and glue the patterned
veneer to it and stack cut say 3 or 4 at a time and if all cut good there would
be say 3 Beautiful pieces of Patterned Wood.  Wow!  Wouldn't the be Good?

That's lovely Keith. Tried  cutting veneer once  but it was not a huge  success but I will give it another go someday.
