Very First Project

Hi
Just completed the work on the scroll saw on my first project. We have a friend who likes butterflies and the pattern from Steve?s site is just what I had in mind.
I probably have to do more sanding but I was so happy that I completed it without breaking a bridge so I would like to share my excitement.
I do, however, have a question on finishing it. What would you use on Walnut for the final finishing coat on an item with many small cuts? I would like some input from the experts before I mess things up.
I appreciate any comments and suggestions
Thanks for looking
Billy

Wow! That is a really great project. If you want it to look dark and rich, you can use some mineral oil to finish it, followed by some spray shellac. I like mineral oil because there is no smell and it makes the wood look beautiful. You could dip it and brush away the excess, and then leave it on a rack to soak in (I use a cookie cooling rack) After it absorbs the oil and begins to look 'dryer' give it a couple of coats of the spray shellac and you will have a rich, natural finish.
Wonderful job!

Nice work Billy. I need to drag my camera out and take some picts too. Have several things finished with no picts and they will be gone soon. I am sure your friend will enjoy. As for the finish, I will let someone else suggest. I am still working one what I want to use.

Beautiful job on a FIRST project!
I would use a 50/50 BLO and Mineral Spirits soak, about 10 minutes...blow it dry with the compressor to get off the excess, let it dry 24 hours and spray with Satin Finish Lacquer, several coats sanded with a grocery bag between spray coats.

really great job for the first time!
both oil and lacker finish will look good on a project like this, its a personal choice.
Or the combination like GB suggested.
an only oil finish will keep the surface a bit more rough and will attract more dust.
I think a lacker finish will keep it better looking over the years.

Billy, Excellent cut. Everybody has their favorite oil - mine is danish oil. the bottom line is dip it - dry - spray. You will find your personal favorite. They all work well.

Very nicely done! Finish is personal, do what YOU want to do, stain for darker, use an oil, cover with shellac or poly. But you did a nice job on the cutting. Well done. Thanks for sharing with us.
