I suck

that's about all I can say about my wood turning ability--spent the after noon making a big mess on the floor and the worlds worst candy--I could put a couple of notches in it and call it an ash tray-wait there are notches in it already--maybe I had better stick with scrolling--even lost my thumb guard in the process--Richard

Wood turning can be pretty tricky...keep at it. Sooner or later you will make something nice and then see the value of it. I have been thinking about combining my scroll saw use with lathe work. Let us know how your turning turns out.

Richard, my first attempt at combining woodturning with scroll work was to make a Pot-Pourri box. I hope to improve on it though. But remember you cut your thumb so you still need to adapt to working with a damaged hand, give it time and I'm sure you will improve. Everything can be worked around, in our woodturning club we have a blind turner (not partially blind, totally blind) he can make bowls that put mine and several others to shame, he works by feel and the sound of the cutting. I'll look for a picture of his work and post it so you can see what I mean. But there is a way round every problem, just takes time and patience. Failing that come over on hol and I'll sort out free lessons to help.

I have turned wood for nearly eleven years. And I am still learning something new everyday. A great thing you can do is get with a seasoned Turner. Its a frustrating craft but it comes to all those who practice. Your tools need to be SHARP! THIS IS BEYOND IMPORTANT! The rest is practice and trial and error. Come on down to West Virginia sometime! My workshop is always open... :)

Richard, show me a man that has never failed and I will show you a man who has never tried anything.

Keep at it. You will do fine.

I find that turning is not like riding a bike. I lose it if I don't practice. About five years ago I took a five day class at CRAFT SUPPLIES in Provo Utah. I learned all the basics of turning bowls and spindles. But I don't turn often enough. every time I go out and try anything, I have forgotten how to do it! So I know how you feel Richard!
