My plans for first project
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:07:17 pm »
I drew up this plan using Paint. I printed it out about 20 inches across. I am still looking to see what kinds of woods I will be using. I know I want to use Zebra for the coastal cliffs. Probably will use pine for the sky and cherry for the land. Not sure about the rest of it all though. Any suggestions would be helpful before I go buying wood and cutting.

I love the way "Blue Pine" turns out when used to represent Water. A good selection can be found at  thehandsomewoodman.com

Blue pine does indeed have heavy blue and grey streaking. It creates a natural looking water effect with highlights and shadows.

Nice to know that. I will do some looking for some. Hope I can locate some here in Phoenix. We have Woodworkers Source. They are pretty good with types of wood.

That looks like it will be an awesome picture when finished, you have drawn it brilliantly. Please dont forget to post pictures of the different stages of the work as I love to see something like that taking shape.

I would use Maple or Basswood for any really white pieces.

Don't expect Bright blue from the blue pine, it's is more grey with a tinge of blue, at least the blue pine I have is, but it does look good as a water effect. Good Luck on your first Intarsia. I just finished my first one tonight, and will be posting pics in the next day or two.
