Thanks everyone for the kind comments. These boat Intarsias are fun to make. I have just started my third one; it's of a larger yacht, a Symbol 55' Sportfisher, moored in Long Beach, CA. named "Billy the Kid".

Very nice work. What kind of wood did you use for this project? Also, did you use any dies to get the wood the colors you ended up with?

Woods used were the following:  Alder Frame, 3/16" Birch backer, Walnut Burl Mountains, Yellow Pine, painted White for the body of the boat, Black Walnut for the boat's Windows and Birds in background and Blue Pine for Water.

I painted the boat because It's the main subject of the Intarsia and I wanted it to stay White.

The only other thing painted is the lettering on the Stern. (Name of Boat)

On the current Boat Intarsia I'm working on i'll probably have a Brass Plate made to put on the lower part of the frame, because the name of the boat may be too long to put on the hull. I'll try it on a piece of paper first and see what it would look like on the boat and then decide.

Ditto to "ALL" the comments Al, and I was wondering about the frame.  How did you do that?  Cut a oblong circle then cut it again? Need a big piece of wood for that.

Chuck, i first drew a pattern for the frame, using a homemade tool, divided it into six sections and then cut & fastened the individual pattern sections onto a 4" wide board then and cut the pieces out and glued them up, making the frame, as you see it.
