Whirligigs....
« on: January 16, 2012, 01:01:47 pm »
Well I have come to my conclusion that I am kind of burned out cutting Portrait patterns.  Last count I had 43 and most are framed.  The Craft Shows around here have no interest in them....SO....i built Marcels Peanut Butter bird feeder yesterday and I simply enjoyed it very much.  Far from Scrolling altho a couple parts required the use.  Now my feelings have turned towards WHRILIGIGS.  I have never constructed one, but it does sound interesting....SO....  Is there anyone in our group that could help out with PLANS and lots of POINTERS?  Hehe that was a accidental Pun.   Anyway....  Danny  :+}

Hi Danny - I don't know if it this helps or not, but I remember seeing an episode of New Yankee Workshop a few years ago when Norm build a Whirligig.  This is the link to their site (http://www.newyankee.com/getproduct.php?9810) for the episode.  You could maybe catch it youtube as well.

Here's a video I posted a while back on the whirligigs
He uses hand tools to build them, just have to think in terms of scrollsawing them.  ;)

Danny, I recommend "Making Whirligigs and other Wind Toys" by Sharon Pierce.  The copy I have has a copyright of 1985.  Lots of patterns and explanations of  the mechanics of wind toys including painting advice.  I made a number of them years ago, and will likely do so again in the future.

BTW: check your email

I have two books on the topic. the one Bill mentioned and "Whirligigs. Design and construction" by anders s. lunde.
Tomorrow I will check my school bookshelf, I remember another book on them that is different then the ones above.
I have pieces of one that I should finish, my dad started it years ago and gave it to me when he emptied his house.

Katy,  I checked and I also have a book from Lunde with 25 whirigig designs.  The title is a little different from yours.

I too learned a lot. Had just set my first whirligig on wood to cut. Very simple bird, but I think it will be fun. Don't seem to be able to find a place that sells the book by Sharon Pierce that use Pay Pal. Any suggestions where to look beside amazon. Don't have a creditcard and am not planning on getting one. :D
I too have a book by Lunde. Have a great day.

If you want to try some new stuff, go to Matthew Wandell on the U-tube, he has 160 vids and counting Bril.
