need a idea for a game

hello I'm Yentl, daughter of Marcel.

for a school project i have to make a (travel)game for more than 1 person.
on a 4"x4" ?" thick pine board.
the game should be played in the car, the train or the plain.
i don't want to make: tic-tac-toe (everybody does)
do you have some idea's or patterns of games i could make?

I have made several of those games for my grandchildren. I've heard them referred to as "Last Man Standing". I used cherry wood and bought some wooden golf tees for the pieces. They are very easy to make.

How about a checker board?  You can make your checkers any shape you want.  Stars, triangles, squares, etc. or you can use what we call half marbles.  Cribbage would be another good one to consider.

The game "M?hle" is called Nine men's morris, which sounds pretty cool.

The theme is pretty simple, but your dad can show you how to cut angled and create an intarsia like game board.

Or you come up with some other idea - there is also an old round version described here: German Wiki explanatin on the board game M?hle
That would spice the theme much more up.

And not to forget the Tapatan that Katie mentioned. That is one even I might go for - thanks Katie!

Try this. Cut the board into a 12 pce. jigsaw and number them 1 to 12 instead of  adding a picture. You will also need 2 dice. Throw the dice and the first no to come out is the starting point. Just for fun say no 8. The next thrower to put down a bit of the puzzle must have a number that connects to the 8, say 7 or 9. To speed things up a bit, if you throw a 5 & 3, you have a choice of putting down piece no 5 or 3 or 8. The winner is the one who puts down the last bit of the puzzle.
 I just made that up, so no idea how long it will take or how boring it will get, or what to call it!! Make up your own rules as you go along. There is not much you can do with a 4? sq pce of wood and I am sure Dad can make the dice for you as well. Hope this helps or gives you an idea. Iggy

Cool idea Iggy, you could make it a bit more complex by making it 4 rows of 4 =16 pieces, a little more luck of the draw would be to divide the pieces after mixing them completely with the numbered side down, so both players start out with half. If you can't make a connection you lose one of your pieces to the other player. You win if you end up with all the pieces or place the last piece.
Should take a while to play, and make the players use their brains problem solving.

Yentl is making a countdown game, but she wouldn't tell me a lot on the progress she's making on school.
