re-thinking Christmas
« on: November 25, 2011, 11:09:41 am »
I just read an posting on the computer about a lady in Los Angeles using pepper spray at a wal-mart to make sure she got to the items she wanted. To me , this is a sad example as to how far civilization has declined. We no longer remember the reason for the season. what ever happen to the sharing time with family & friends?? now it seems that people just want to brag about how nuch they have given their kids. Kids, who in a few days won't remember what they got or who gave it to them. they won't have any memories or traditions when they grow up.-Well so much for my complaining --Richard aka thumbs

I agree with you Thumbs.  It is disgusting how some people are.  I didn't even want to consider doing a 'Black Friday' sale for my site because to me, it just exploits the season too much.  I try to run sales all year and special ones to my regular customers as a show of appreciation throughout the year.  I don't need a special day to do so.  It may not be the 'door busters' that the big companies have, but it is the best I can do being a small business. I may not be a great business woman, but I don't care.

It is a shame how some people are acting.  With times as hard as they are for many, you would think (and hope) that people would want to get back to basics and their roots.  I find myself wishing things were how they were when I was younger.

We can only hope that people will come to their senses and sanity will prevail. :/

Some people think we came from animals, but I think we are turning into animals.  This is just a greater percentage of people, not everyone.

It is sad how we as humans have declined.. I have made my Christmas gifts and yes I remember my childhood Christmas'.. My Mother always made our Christmas be it doll clothes or clothing for us.. We sit around and listened to the Christmas story, the one from the Bible.. God help humanity for they are greedy and selfish.. I personally hate shopping be it now or any time.. It's shameful to see how people act now... Well guess I better step off my soap box before I offend someone.. Richard you are right and I agree with you totally... Sheila

I have had a great Black Friday!  I spent part of the day doing finishing work on a bookcase I am making for my youngest Grandaughter, and part of the evening starting out building a hallway shoe bench requested by my Daughterinlaw.  Both are to be Christmas presents.  I did go to a store, but only to pickup a half sheet of birch plywood.  With some luck I will finish both projects this weekend.  That's my idea of how to spend the day!

Richard - I'm glad you brought this sad subject up.  I'm also glad to read [other responses] that we scrollers have similar life values. It's nice to know we share more than patterns & saw dust.  :)

First of all I would like to ask "What is Black Friday"? (Sorry for my ignorance).  And secondly I agree that some people are like animals when it comes to sales no matter what time of the year.  I try to make our Christmas's similar to the ones I had when I was growing up and I think my children and grandchildren appreciate it.

Black Friday is the day that most US retailers go from being in the red to the black.  It is the biggest shopping day of the year.  They offer deep discounts and sales to get you in at rediculous hours.  Many open at midnight on Thanksgiving or at 4 or 6 in the morning.  There is usually a limited amount of the big items so people resort to fighting, pushing etc to be the first in line to get it.  In Los Angeles this year, a lady resorted to pepper spraying other shoppers to get what she wanted.  Personally, I have never shopped a black friday.  I hate to shop under the best of circumstances and this day is certainly not my cup of tea.  There is generally at least one person trampled to death getting into a store.  No thanks.  It's ironic that the day after we give thanks for what we have, we are out buying more.

That's what sales manager want - and it turns out just right!

They do this to get you emotional about the Christmas shopping.
They want YOU to have a bad feeling when you do not participate - because YOU think you've missed some.
YOU should think others have gotten something YOU didn't get.
That's how selling works.

But I see that you have come across to decide yourself if you want to buy or not. And that's good.

I have done the *Black Friday*.......been there done that.  This year I spent my *Black Friday* christmas shopping on the computer.  Same deep discounts, no crowds, great parking spot (the driveway) and several sites offered free shipping.  Just have to get a couple gift cards and I am done.

We make some of our gifts, however my husbands girls are *material girls*.  So I buy a couple of things the rest are Gift cards.

We do special ornaments every year for the grandkids so when they grow up and have their own trees they will have something Grandpa made them and to remember him by.

Pepper spray.....hmmmmmmmmmm  I wonder if she used it.  I also wonder if she realizes she can go to jail!!!  Not sure if it would be a felony or misdemeaner.  Either way she could be in a whole lot of trouble.  People are really selfish now a days.  To bad someone doesn't step in to put a stop to the greedy merchants who started this mess.

Ok I'm off my soapbox...................  :)

Remember "A Field of Dreams"?

They have built the "SALE" tradition and the sheep flock to the stores fighting, kicking, scratching all the way to "Bankruptcy Court"!

GrayBeard's Theory of "MEism".
He has it, I want it and I will do anything right or wrong to possess it even if it means hurting him AND myself in the process!
