I have usually used 1/4 bb but have been starting to use more of the 1/8 bb for it fits in store bought frames better. The only bad thing is you either have to make 2 of them to get the support and I usually only do one to see if I can do it and what it looks like. Any suggestions to make that support layer out of to cut the cost of using two layers of 1/8 bb .

Why use just one or two?  When doing portraits I often stack 3, 4 or even more just so that i have the support and have plenty to sell, donate or just plain give away...
1/8" is cheap enough to use as a 'throw-away" and sometimes it works out very nice...see some of my posts in the brag section...

Instead of using multiple layers of BB, back the BB with a scapr piece of something cheap. I think "luan" ( I think thats how you spell it) is pretty cheap to use as a backer. But i agree with GB, just stack cut with BB, and make a few moew copies of your project.

Good luck!

Hey Dave, Really, BB is relatively Cheap. At Woodcraft it is only $1.50 for a 12x12 sheet. When you consider the wonderful art piece you are creating. it is worth it!

Anytime I do a portrait of kids, I always do 2 copies.  I give the second one as a freeby to the buyer.  That way they have one to keep and one to give to grandma.  This raises your praise factor to their friends by 100%.  PS- don't tell them ahead of time, suprise them.
Being you stack cut your only expense is the extra board.

We have a store called Ganahl Lumber in So.Cal. that sells 5x5 sheets of 1/8th BB for 18.00. I buy all of my BB from them. If I am doing 8 1/2 x11 pics I have them cut a couple 11 inch strips for me (Makes it easier to handle). Mike

I always cut 2 or more at a time. Since it's cheap enough, you could have a 2-for-1 sale and make someone feel like they are getting a great deal.
