Christmas Ornament
« on: October 12, 2011, 02:22:57 pm »
I live in Iowa in a farming area.  I was just wondering if somrone could give me an idea of what to charge for my Christmas Ornaments.  I make them out of Cedar, Maple (hard and soft), Red Oak, and other hard wood.  I have a show this Sat. and Sunday.  gene

First off, what kind of ornaments are you selling?  Flat or slotted?  What is the economy like in your area?  These are things I take into consideration where I live.  I sell my flat ornaments for $5.00 and the slotted range between $6.00 to $8.00.  And if they order a full set of a series I have been working on, they usually get a free ornament.  So it just depends.  I am always being told I under sell myself.

Thanks for the come back.  I was also thinking $5.00  too, most of them are flat, and the economy here is bad.  When you say a set what is in the set, and how man?

Thanks

arrange sets - or make it a "buy 5 get 1 free". The price always depends on where and to whom you sell - you'll find the right price.

Gene, when I say sets, I really mean series of ornaments such as the wood feather series or the Dream Catcher series in which Shelia Landry designed.  I cut many of these and if a customer buys the whole series, they get them at a discounted rate.  I am sorry for the confusion.
However, Torsten is also correct when he says "arranged sets.".
Check my website and you will understand what I mean about ornament series.  I have them categorized. www.cewoodworks.com

I sell mine for $5 as you can cut at least 4 at a time, 1/2 an hour to cut that's $40 an hour ha ha.
The ply wood ones I cut sell for $4 as the ply is free and I can stack cut 6 at a time

oh right, we didn't mention stack cutting yet. That's why you can adjust your prices like Jim mentioned.

Katie, mostly because I cut hardwoods rather than plywood.  The only plywood I cut is for the slotted ornaments and even then I do some of them from hardwoods.  I have tried to stack cut 2 1/4 inch hardwood pieces once, lets just say I could not feel my fingers when I got done.

Hey Cherie, How long has it been since you have tried stack cutting? Maybe your technique has improved since the last time you tried. It should be easy to cut two or three layers of 1/4" hardwoods or four to six layers of 1/8" hardwoods. Even for delicate ornaments. After the holiday rush, you should try it again!

Dan, I received news that I may have more hand bells to cut.  If this happens, I will have to cut well over 100 of them.  I just might have to do it whether or not I like it.  However, with the weather changing and all, it affects the body and right now, most days it take a while to unstiffin.  lol.  Hands do not want to work properly if you know what I mean.
