I'm Puzzled
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:35:04 pm »
I went to Mike's Work Shop to ask him a question, but I found no place to e-mail him.  So I here asking another question.  I want to start sawing portaits, but I am not sure what blades to use.  I hear some say Spiral Blades, and some say other types of blades.  My first job will be useing BB.  Can some one help me on this blade issue.  Thanks in advance.

Hey Gene, Go on his site: www.mikesworkshop.com. Click on order form. There you will find his email address and his telephone number.
I use a combination of blades for portraits. I use Olsen 2/0R's and 2R's, and Flying Dutchman NR 2/0 and NR 1 blades. The NR are spiral blades.
The reason I use flat and spiral blades is I have a hard time with spirals. So I use the flat blade for most of the cutting and the spirals for where a flat blade wont work. I am currently working on Grampa's three puppies, and for 90% of the cuts I an using the 2/0R flat blades, and the spirals for the rest.

I've yet to find one of those spots.  Just take your time.  Personally I can't use spirals.  it really is a matter of personal preference.

As far as the blade to use, its what you feel most comfortable using.   I use a 2/0 blade for the small intricates like most of the ones in portraits.  My favorite blade is a crown tooth.  Use it in all sizes for most of my projects.  A lot of people don't like them as they tend to pull up more saw dust.  I have tried spiral blades but can't get use to them.  Best bet is to try several kinds and use what you like.

Thanks again

For me, the spirals apply for situations where my saw (16") isn't big enough to turn the wood as is necessary when using flat blades.  Not so much the personal preference thing, but the necessity thing!
