MAGNETS

Does any one have any suggestions as to where I can find the small rare earth magnets or for that matter any small magnets that can be used for box lids? SMALL, I mean 1/8" diameter; such as you would find in those unfinished boxes sold at "Michaels" or other box craft stores.

Woodcraft sells them in various sizes as does Peachtree supply.  I bought an assortment of 100 magnets a while back on a special from Peachtree.

I like the fact you can mix or match or just get one size from Lee Valley, and 1 or a hundred.

I had the same problem so I went to the answer store....Lowes (but any place will work) and bought some of those little refrigator magnets that look like push pin tacks. You know, the ones that look like thumb tacks with the "spool" plastic ends.
If you squeese them with a vice or pliers, the plastic breaks off and you have a perfect little magnet 1/8" round and 1/8" long.  They are fairly strong and very cheap. I think it was $1.95 for 10 of them. Don't really rember.

Think outside the lines.

Gentlemen, your suggestions are very welcomed!  Lee Valley has just what I was looking for; will visit Peachtree to see what they have.  A special thanks to Rapid Roger regarding thinking out of the box; I like the idea of re-tasking the refridge magnets - thanks.

I buy my magnets from www.supermagnetman.net they have excellent cusotmer service and a variety of types.
I have reused other kitchen magnets as well. Just make sure you like the type of magnet before you buy all of them, some times they have cheaper less strong magnets (the flexible black magnets are not very useful to woodworking)
you can also find magnets at the hobby stores like joann and michaels. Usually near suction cups. You will want the silver ones not the black ones for most things.

I discovered a use for the flexible magnet. I have a couple campaign magnetic auto door signs left from the last election. I have found covering my cast iron table with it, protects against rust by covering it tightly enough that there is no condensation since the air is kept away. Especially important in a humid environment. Now that is RECYCLING!
Plus I'll have it for the next election.
